I've been hearing a lot about Dinosaur Jr, and I'd never listened to them before today, but damn! They're pretty good, although a little out of vogue now that the 90's are over and Kurt's dead. Anyway, check them out, cause they're pretty good and they're touring a lot so you might actually be able to indulge in the last method of supporting starving artists permissible by major labels. Hope your summer's turning out to be everything you expected.

Vampire Weekend

I love Vampire Weekend, and so does the rest of the world. It's nothing to be ashamed of really: they're technically tight, melodically inventive and overall pretty awesome. I can't shake the feeling though, that I'm not supposed to like them; it's a little like how I feel about Madonna. But no matter how much I resist them I have to admit in the end that I love this band. Perhaps their only weakness is their stupid name. Then again, The Beatles is a stupid name too.

Daft Punk

I first heard Daft Punk's song Technologic about a year ago. I thought it was clever but not that great, so I didn't listen to them again until a month or so ago. They're amazing. Most techno sounds a little amateur and experimental, but these guys have their sound figured out. If you've never heard them before, check out the song Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. It's a mashup of several of their hits, and I've had it on repeat for the past couple of days.

The Tiny Masters of Today are a ridiculously awesome Brooklyn duo composed of a twelve year old boy and his ten year old sister. Usually when I like a band this young, it's because of their age and not because of the music. But after hearing thousands upon thousands of adults pouring out recycled riffs, it's really exhilarating to hear kids because they're just playing what they want to play because it's fun, not because of arbitrary societal rules.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are awesome. I hate genres, but I think they're called post-punk. I liked their album Show Your Bones when I got it, but I didn't really get into the Yeah Yeah Yeahs until I found Fever to Tell (their first album). Now they've released an EP called Is Is that is a little bit of a return to their earlier sound with a very subtly more sophisticated edge.

Whitey

Whitey was a pretty random find. I happened to stumble on his single Wrap it Up and I was entranced. He's a pretty crazy electronic solo project. He has toured with both Peaches and Iggy Pop (awesome!) who described him as "a friend of my son's. He's a tattooed biker-drinker-loser guy." I'm still exploring his stuff, but so far he's pretty cool. A lot of his songs are pretty quiet and trancy, which always makes for good electronic work. So try a link:

I was introduced to the White Stripes when their single Seven Nation Army came out a while back. I didn't really like it but I checked out their other stuff and I loved it. Their latest album, Icky Thump, is just like all of their other albums. It has one innovative and daring single that reestablishes Jack White as a musical genius. The rest of the album is Jack and Meg messing around, doing whatever they want. Consequently, every White Stripes album has one really great single, several great mildly experimental songs, and a couple duds.

I have reviewed TV on the Radio once before, but after buying their second full-length album, Return to Cookie Mountain, I felt like I should say something. From their very first release, these guys have been on a path that no one else is exploring or has ever explored. With every release they are getting farther and farther into a beautiful realm of music that no one else has the guts to explore yet. Return to Cookie Mountain goes even farther into the musical future.

The Fratellis

I first heard the Fratellis in an iTunes ad, and fell instantly in love. I discovered to my great dismay however, that they weren't available in the US iTunes store. I checked every day though, and they showed up pretty fast. I just saw them at the Fillmore about a week ago and they were awesome (short set though). They have only one album, called Costello Music.

I was listening to a couple albums I haven't listened to in a while, and I glanced over at my fancy new iLike sidebar and I noticed "Louis XIV" kept coming up so I listened to their preview. They're awesome, and really catchy and energetic. They've released two albums so far, in addition to one live album from the Virgin Megastore. Scary looking guys though...

I found out about The Pigeon Detectives randomly on Myspace. They're one of those bands that you love not because they do anything meaningful, but because they do just the opposite. Their songs are energetic, vibrant, catchy and danceable. They don't have much on iTunes, but their new album comes out on the 28th. Check out the video for their latest single - I'm Not Sorry...

When I first heard Hot Chip I hated them. They sounded totally uncoordinated and random. Then about a week later, a I couldn't get Over and Over out of my head. I listened to it again and it's really good. They're very unusual, and they're hard to get used to, but they're really good. Many of their songs have a really cool laid-back vibe that keeps me coming back for more. Check them out.

I found out about these guys on myspace a while ago so it totally surprised me to find out they've been around since 1989. They sound very current, a little britpoppy. They have a very original sound... It's hard to find a band with their own direction anymore. All the songs on their myspace are available for free download.

I heard about Shiny Toy Guns a while ago, even looked them up once, I think... But I heard they're playing at BFD this year so I figured they deserved another listen. I'm fairly picky about my more electronic music, but I have to admit that this band is growing on me. Their album We Are Pilots has some really good songs, including their (sorta hit) single Le Disko.

Kaiser Chiefs

My friend saw the Kaiser Chiefs a couple days ago and he said they were pretty good. All I had heard was their hit single "Ruby" (inexhaustably catchy) but he recommended their first album, Employment. It's pretty good, and very catchy. It sounds like a lot of other stuff in some respects but they definitely have their own sound. I've heard that their second album isn't as good, but judge for yourself...

I was really into the Arctic Monkeys last year when their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not came out. When I heard they were going to release a new one (called Favourite Worst Nightmare) I hopped on iTunes and pre-ordered. So it came out today and I listened to it right after school and IT’S AWESOME. I first heard about The Noisettes because I was trying to go to a TV on the Radio concert at the Fillmore and The Noisettes were opening for them. I didn’t check them out, though, until a couple of weeks ago. They’re really good. They have a crazy front… woman. She has a really cool voice, a little like Karen O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. If you haven't heard TV on the Radio quietly hold your head down in shame and shuffle over to iTunes. They have an amazing quiet vibe throughout every song. I was hooked as soon as I heard their debut EP, Young Liars. I bought their first album, Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes as soon as it came out and all I can say is that it's beautiful.

These guys were the best show at the Download Festival, despite the pedophile behind me dancing like a fifty-year-old ragdoll. The Like is better live than recorded but their album Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking is good, if not great. At least it's original. All the bandmembers are the spawn of one or another famous musician.

I saw these guys at the Download Festival back in 2006 and then again two days ago at the Civic Center and they were amazing both times. They have a really full sound for only three people. With lots of sweeping, grandiose synth bits and powerful guitar, they fill up a room. Their latest album is called Black Holes and Revelations.

Fans of the sound of Goldfrapp's first album (Felt Mountain) might not immediately take to their latest effort: Supernature. Compared with Felt Mountain's pared-down style and simple arrangements, Supernature seems almost gaudy. Their new direction is good, though. It's more layered, complex and addictive. Don't listen to the critics. This synthy, swirling, very danceable band is going places.

I heard about the view quite a while ago and thought they were okay, but my overwhelming love of Wolfmother blinded me and I refused to see just how good they really are. Their sound isn't quite developed yet, but Hats Off to The Buskers is a very solid debut album. They are not yet available in the US iTunes store.
